ADD stands for Attention deficit disorder, while ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The terms are often used interchangeably, however there is a slight difference between both in that ADD is not hyperactivity related. ADD and ADHD are neurological disorders that cause behavioral problems. They mostly occur in children, as adults with ADHD typically had the disorder since childhood, but it may not be diagnosed until later in life. Although ADD manifests differently in children, children with ADD are generally not disruptive, and may appear to be bored or disinterested while in school, seem disorganized, are prone to daydreaming or forgetfulness and work at a slow pace. ADD can be treated with stimulant medications such as Ritalin & Adderall to help children stay on-task and focused. The development of behavior intervention plans with the assistance of a child psychologist can help to teach kids adaptive behavior skills and reduce off-task and inattentive behaviors. The intervention plan is more favorable because it may result in permanent improvement in concentration skills which medication cannot provide. On the other hand, children with ADHD can be inattentive, hyperactive-impulsive, or both. Children with ADHD are easily distracted; forgetful, even in daily activities; have trouble keeping attention on tasks or activities; fail to finish schoolwork or chores; appear to be always on the go; have severe difficulty waiting for their turn; run around or climb in inappropriate situations; unable to quietly play or take part in leisure activities; intrude on and interrupt others constantly; squirm in their seat, tap their hands or feet, or fidget. Treatment for ADHD includes stimulants, non-stimulants (improves focus, attention, and impulsivity), and antidepressants. Psychotherapy and Psychosocial Interventions can also address ADHD e.g. Cognitive behavioral therapy, Family and marital therapy. There is no exact known cause of ADD and ADHD, but it is thought that the following factors play a role: genetics; cigarette smoking, alcohol use, or drug use during pregnancy, exposure to environmental toxins during pregnancy, exposure to environmental toxins such as high levels of lead at a young age, low birth weight, and brain injuries. Diagnosis and treat of these conditions are done by a psychologist, psychiatrist, neurologist and a family physician.
