DPC is an alternative payment model that helps to improve access to healthcare with an affordable membership fee. Patients pay their physician or practice directly in the form of periodic payments (either flat monthly or annual) for a defined set of primary care services. Fees range from $30-$90 depending on age. The fee covers almost primary care services including clinical and laboratory services, consultative services, care coordination, and comprehensive care management. It allows physicians to focus more time, attention and effort on caring for patients, while reducing administrative burden and decreasing practice overhead and stabilizing practice finances. Patients also benefit from enhanced services, such as real time access via advanced communication technology to their personal physician, extended visits, in some cases home-based medical visits, and highly personalized, coordinated, and comprehensive care administration. Usually, most patients still carry insurance for coverage of healthcare services that the DPC cannot provide, such as specialty care and hospitalizations. The DPC model is suited for patients with high deductible plans where they might normally be paying out of pocket for any primary care services that are not considered preventive.
