Physical therapist is a branch of rehabilitative medicine that uses specially designed exercises and equipment to help patients reduce or eliminate pain resulting from injury, infirmity and medical conditions. It is also known as physiotherapy, and is applicable to individuals of all ages. Physical therapy is practiced by a physical therapist/physiotherapist in a wide range of settings, including hospitals, outpatient clinics, people’s homes, schools, sports and fitness facilities, workplaces, private practices, and nursing homes. Types of physical therapy include Orthopedic – treats musculoskeletal injuries; Geriatric Physical Therapy – for older patients who develop conditions that affect their mobility and physical function, e.g. arthritis, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease, hip and joint replacement; Neurological Physical Therapy – helps with neurological disorders and conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, brain injury, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury, and stroke; Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation – for people affected by some cardiopulmonary conditions and surgical procedures; Pediatric Physical Therapy – treats conditions that affect infants, children, and adolescents, e.g. developmental delays, cerebral palsy, spina bifida; Wound Care Therapy – ensures that a healing wound is receiving adequate oxygen and blood by way of improved circulation; Vestibular Therapy – aims to treat balance problems that can result from inner ear conditions; Decongestive Therapy – drains accumulated fluid in patients with lymphedema and other conditions that involve fluid accumulation; Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation – treats urinary or fecal incontinence, urinary urgency and pelvic pain in men and women as a result of injuries or surgery.
