Salt therapy is a holistic therapy that involves inhaling pharmaceutical-grade dry salt in a comfortable, controlled environment. It is also referred to as Halotherapy. A special device called a halogenerator is used to disperse microscopic salt particles into the room. Salt therapy can help to clear pollens, pollutants, toxins and viral causing agents from lungs and nasal tracts; provide relief from skin conditions such as dermatitis, acne, eczema, and psoriasis; reduce symptoms of allergies, asthma, and respiratory issues; clear sinusitis & reduce snoring. It can also relieve the flu and cold, and enhance sport performance. It is believed that dry salt is highly absorbent and has natural anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which once inhaled can cause mucus to thin and liquefy, making it easier to excrete– along with pathogens, debris and pollutants. The dryer the salt particles are, the higher the hydroscopic effect is inside the airways, thereby benefiting the whole respiratory system. The salt is also said to gently accelerate the body’s natural cilia movement – cilia help keep the airways clear of mucus and dirt to facilitate easy breathing. Dry salt can absorb impurities, regulate the pH level and promote skin’s ‘good’ bacteria. It improves the skin’s protective properties, reducing inflammation and encouraging natural exfoliation and regeneration. The number of sessions and the length of the therapy can vary, depending on the level of respiratory discomfort. However, there is yet to be evidence-based findings to create guidelines for patients and clinicians about salt therapy.
