Sex therapy is a form of counseling that helps individuals and couples address medical, psychological, personal, or interpersonal factors impacting sexual satisfaction. It aims to help people reframe sexual challenges and move past physical and emotional challenges to have a healthier sex life. Sex therapy is similar to psychotherapy in that it involves the client talking through their experiences, worries, and feelings. Sex therapy addresses a number of sexual problems including erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, vaginismus, dyspareunia (pain during sex), anorgasmia (inability to achieve orgasm), lack of response to sexual stimulus, low or excessive libido, loss of sexual desire or sex, inability to control sexual behavior, distressing sexual thoughts and unwanted sexual fetishes. Sessions usually last for 30 to 50 minutes, but the number of sex therapy sessions required depends on the duration, nature and history of the problem. It is usually not a long-term treatment, but this is based on the client’s commitment to therapy sessions and more importantly, to home practice activities. Home practice usually consists of Experimentation – for couples who lack of desire e.g. role playing or using sex toys, adjusting sexual routine or positions; Sensate focus – to build trust and intimacy while reducing anxiety starting with nonsexual touching, progressing to genital touching, and, usually, ending with penetration; Education – for clients with inadequate sex education, the therapist might assign books or web content to read or videos to watch; Communication strategies – where clients practice asking for what they want or need sexually or emotionally in a relationship.
