Natural Integrative Healthcare is the apotheosis of my lifelong passion for health and wellbeing!
I was born overseas and grew up in Germany, Switzerland, The Netherlands, and United Kingdom where I gained an appreciation for a holistic approach to health and nutrition. My mother always prepared meals “from scratch”. No processed foods and frozen dinners at our house! Nutritious family dinners were and remain a cornerstone and keystone in my life.
Blessed with a curious mind I decided at age eleven to become a physician. That would be easier said than done. My British education at that time did not offer chemistry and physics and was not conducive to pursuing science. After graduating from the University of York, England, I met and married my husband and we started a family. I put all thoughts of medical studies and career to the side.
Fast forward to age 40 - stress, environmental toxins, 2 teenagers and the fast, intense pace of daily life, my “rain-barrel” began to overflow and I needed to focus on optimizing my health. I found myself being shuttled from one physician’s office to another with good intentions to find solutions to my symptoms, but with less than optimal results. It was at this time, that I discovered naturopathic medicine. My healing journey took “the road less travelled” for the next ten years, as I explored holistic avenues to regain my health.
At the half century mark, I began my studies in chemistry, biochemistry, organic chemistry, physics, physiology and anatomy. I applied to medical school and in August 2010 embarked on a four-year journey to complete my medical studies. It was blood, sweat and tears the whole way- but I did it! I was determined to fulfill my childhood vision and make a difference in the lives of others. Moreover, I did not wish to look back on my life and have any regrets.
About 2500 years ago, Hippocrates, an ancient Greek physician, wisely stated, “All disease begins in the gut!” Gastrointestinal health is the center of all the inner workings of your body. This concept is echoed in naturopathic medical practice, since gastrointestinal (GI) function contributes to many other aspects of overall health. Did you know that 80% of your immune system is located in your gut? What you eat and how you eat, makes a big difference! In today’s environment with fast foods, high fat, and little time, a healthy diet has unprecedented significance. Yes, it is true. You are what you eat!
