Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a dynamic and psychological intervention that helps to modify behaviors and thoughts with the aim of improving the client’s self-awareness, confidence, communication skills, and social actions. It involves the use of perceptual, behavioral, and communication techniques, and relies on language processing. To break it down, Neuro refers to how the information we take in influences the nervous system; Linguistic refers to the personal meaning/language we apply to the information we take in; Programming, in this case, refers to habits – the behaviors we form as a result of the information we take in. There are four foundations in neuro-linguistic programming: 1) Rapport – connecting quickly with others, 2) Sensory Awareness – becoming more aware of colors, smells, and sounds in one’s surroundings, 3) Outcome Thinking – the goal for doing something, 4) Behavioral Flexibility – the ability to do something differently if the current method isn’t working. NLP has been applied as a therapy for psychological disorders such as fears and phobias, generalized anxiety disorders, depression, poor self-esteem, stress, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The ultimate goal of NLP is to help the client understand that their perception of the world influences their behaviors, and that it is necessary to change the thoughts and behavior patterns that have not proven beneficial in the past. NLP believes that clients have the answers to their problems within themselves; it is simply a matter of consulting a trained therapist to help draw out the answers. Simply put, all people need is a desire to change and willingness to learn new ways of being.
