IV Drip Rate Calculator
Calculate IV flow rate in drops per minute and milliliters per hour. Includes common drop factor presets (10, 15, 20, 60 gtt/mL) for quick calculations.
Accurate IV drip rate calculation is essential for safe fluid and medication administration. Whether administering IV fluids in a clinical setting, supporting naturopathic IV therapy, or studying for certification exams, this calculator provides instant, accurate flow rate conversions. The tool converts between the total volume ordered, the infusion time, and the tubing drop factor to determine the precise drops per minute needed. It also displays the equivalent milliliters per hour rate commonly used with infusion pumps. Common drop factor presets (macro drip: 10, 15, 20 gtt/mL and micro drip: 60 gtt/mL) are built in for quick selection.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter the total volume to be infused in milliliters (mL). Enter the infusion time in hours and/or minutes. Select the drop factor (gtt/mL) for the IV tubing being used — standard macro drip sets are 10, 15, or 20 gtt/mL, while micro drip sets are 60 gtt/mL. The calculator instantly displays the required drip rate in drops per minute and the equivalent flow rate in mL/hr.
Formula & Method
Drip Rate (gtt/min) = (Volume in mL × Drop Factor in gtt/mL) ÷ (Time in minutes). Flow Rate (mL/hr) = Volume in mL ÷ Time in hours. For example: 1000 mL over 8 hours with a 15 gtt/mL drop factor = (1000 × 15) ÷ 480 = 31.25 gtt/min, and 1000 ÷ 8 = 125 mL/hr.
